Opportunity Belief
Opportunity Belief
1) Many students have difficulty managing their time for homework assignments and studying.
2) Students don't have enough time to do everything on their list sometimes. Between studying for exams, completing homework, going to discussion classes, working, wanting to have a social life, and getting enough sleep it can be hard for college students to balance everything on their plate. This belief has always existed. Students get overworked sometimes, causing them to drop out of school or have a breakdown. Some elements that may help with this problem is the block schedule of classes and extended due dates. The DRC at UF also helps because if you have anxiety problems, you could get extended time for your exams and assignments.
3) Two of my friends seem to have this problem often. I can see the struggle they go through because we also live together. It's easier to recognize the problem, especially when you live with the person that's being affected.
One of my friends, Sara, has difficulty managing her time with classes, work, volunteering, and studying. With a heavy course load this semester, it's been harder for her to study. She has classes everyday from 10-2 and then work from 3-8. She's afraid she won't pass some of her classes this semester because of how busy she is. She tries managing her time as best as possible, but with everything building up, it could be hard. Sara experiences this mostly when an exam is coming up and she feels as though she hasn't had enough time to study. Currently, Sara is trying to schedule days dedicated to studying and doing homework which are also the days she doesn't work. This could make her less stressed with everything else going on.
Riley is my roommate. She goes to Santa Fe and is a freshmen studying political science. This is only her second semester in college and she's already having a hard time. Riley also has ADHD so it could be extremely hard for her to concentrate on things. She's on the volleyball team, volunteers, and is taking 5 classes. She feels as though she doesn't have good study methods to help her study and she doesn't have good time management skills when it comes to deadlines. She's felt this since last semester, understandable so because it was her first semester. I try my best to help Riley with studying or proof-reading papers for her when necessary. She also tries to complete things several days before they're due, so she has them out of the way. Riley is doing her best with everything she has going on even though it can be more difficult for her at times.
Dana is another girl I live with. We are close friends and we typically air out our frustrations about situations together. Dana is also a political science major and is trying to also major in Chinese. She's passionate about student government, as she was the senator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UF. She feels like she doesn't manage time well when it comes to studying for Chinese. This is understandable because it is a completely different language than English. She also says she doesn't set enough time aside to put in the effort she needs when studying Chinese. To combat this issue, she has been studying with a friend from her Chinese class who helps her make flashcards and gives her advice on how to remember certain Chinese characters.
I learned that each of my friends have found a way to fix their time management skills by themselves because they realized it had become a problem. It was surprising that they came to the realization themselves because sometimes people don't know they're failing until it's too late. Self-awareness was important in this activity and all three of my friends were able to find it before they really suffered.
My original opportunity is still there because some people don't have the self-awareness that others might have about the problems that surround them. This is still a major problem around college campuses, initially a program or a class that could help with managing time and self-awareness would be great for students to help them out during hard times. Entrepreneurs should adapt their opportunities based on customer feedback because it could accurately help the customers to the best of their ability. With having a custom feedback to some customers, it could really help them fix their problems around them.
Hi Jenna,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you that students have a very hard time managing school, work, extra curricular, and social life. A lot of people say that college students have so much free time, but that is not true at all. It was cool that you interviewed three different people with different schedules and really analyzed what they are struggling with. It puts into perspective how busy college students can actually be. Your last comment on how people are not self aware of the problems that surround them stood out to me as it is so true. Great Post!
I believe you have a strong opportunity. I would, however, consider the fact that those you interviewed complain about not being able to do everything on their list all have a pretty long list. While I agree that there is still an opportunity to provide extra support, I think that examining the root cause, the long list, might provide a different opportunity.
